- Influenza is a viral infection caused by the influenza virus. It's
more commonly known as the "flu" and people become ill when they
breathe in liquid droplets containing the influenza virus that have
been sneezed or coughed into the air. The symptoms come on suddenly
and include fever, headache, cough, sore throat and muscle aches.
