2. Statistical Information

The graph below details the total number of registrations of people who identify themselves as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent within Barwon Health Mental Health Services, from the year 1986 until February 1999.

The data suggests there has been significant problems with access to mental health services by Koori people, particularly prior to 1996.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports that the indigenous population of the Barwon sub region was 560 in 1986, 895 in 1991, and 1155 in 1996.

Based on the ABS population figures and data from Mental Health Services, the level of access to mental health services by the Barwon sub region's indigenous population has been as follows, 1986:0 per cent; 1991:0 per cent; 1996:0.69 per cent.
