APPENDIX 2. RISK ASSESSMENT
When assessing a Koori client for safety issues the following guidelines
will be useful to the clinician and should be utilised. It is essential for
the 'assessor to recognise that if a Koori person expresses suicidal intent
they are serious and should never be considered to be behaving in a
manipulative fashion.
Risk Factors
Recent deaths in the client's extended family or friend network;
Recent suicides in family or friend network;
Recent relationship breakdown or conflict;
History of suicide in extended family or friend network;
History of past suicidal behaviour;
Drug and/or alcohol abuse history;
Current Intoxication Drugs/alcohol;
Family, friends, or client expressing concerns re: safety;
Recent incarceration or legal difficulties;
Withdrawn or avoidant presentation. That is if the Koori person makes
limited eye contact, is unable or
unwilling to respond verbally, or is unable or unwilling to engage in the
assessment process.
