APPENDIX 6. YOUTH BUSINESS PLACE

The youth of Wathaurong have reported to the Moroponuk Officer that the best way to approach their SESW issues is to have a "Youth Business Place" and to have a range of counselling, support, and education programs.

The "Youth Business Place" has been described to the Moroponuk Officer as a farmhouse or bush retreat that combines an ongoing work program with detoxification and counselling programs.

It has been suggested that it needs to be reasonably isolated to lessen the opportunities for the youth to return to Geelong and engage in whatever risk taking behaviour or relationship dispute they are attempting to resolve.

As previously described this environment could provide a safe place for the youth of Wathaurong during conflict with parents, partners, other family members or members of their community (preferable alternative to the street.).

This service could also function as a bail address for homeless youths, a venue to serve community hours re: a community based order, a detox' service (as described above), and a place for the young people to re-discover and integrate their spiritual and cultural heritage.

It would seem practical that this service be combined in the Koori Place of Cultural and Spiritual Healing. This would be a community decision, and would require extensive consultation and community based discussion. It is not appropriate to discuss this further here.
