4.4 Other Koori Mental
Health Related Initiatives
A number of other
initiatives relate to the development of mental health and social, emotional
and cultural wellbeing services for Koori people. The establishment of the
Victorian Regional Training Centre for Emotional and Spiritual Wellbeing,
which is being managed by VACCHO and funded by the Office of Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander Health Services (OATSIHS), will provide a community
controlled training program specifically focused on social, emotional and
cultural wellbeing issues.
Other community controlled
initiatives (such as the VACCHO Workforce Issues Project and existing
cross-cultural training programs) must also be acknowledged as playing
significant roles in working towards the provision of more responsive and
effective services. The Resource Unit for Indigenous Mental Health Education
and Research (RUIMHER) should also be acknowledged.
It is important to
highlight the complementary nature of these initiatives, given that they all
have the potential to enhance the effectiveness and overall success of each
other.
