Mental Health

  • American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry - Links, fact sheets, and practice guidelines.

  • Bipolar Disorder and Children - Many children and especially adolescents experience mood swings as a normal part of growing up, but when these feelings persist and begin to interfere with a child’s ability to function in daily life, bipolar disorder could be the cause. National Mental Health Association Fact Sheet.

  • Children, Mental Illness and Medicines - It is unfortunate that childhood offers no protection against mental illness. In the US, one in five children and adolescents suffer from mental health problems at any given time.

  • Children Of Parents With Mental Illness - Mental illnesses in parents represent a risk for children in the family. These children have a higher risk for developing mental illnesses than other children. When both parents are mentally ill, the chance is even greater that the child might become mentally ill. American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

  • Child mental health problems in the Gaza strip - This study describes the mental health characteristics of 150 children of 6-13 years of age, who had been referred to different types of services in the Gaza strip: a community mental health centre, five primary health centres and a paediatric hospital. Abdel Aziz Mousa Thabet and Panos Vostanis. Gaza community Mental Health Programme, PO Box 1049, Gaza, Palestine

  • Depression and Children - All children "feel blue", from time to time, have a bad day, or are sad. However, when these feelings persist and begin to interfere with a child’s ability to function in daily life, clinical depression could be the cause. National Mental Health Association Fact Sheet.

  • Mental Health and Growing Up, Second Edition - Parental mental illness - the problems for children. Psychiatric problems are very common. Many children will grow up with a parent who, at some point, will suffer from a mental illness. Factsheet 17, Royal College of Psychiatrists

  • Mental Health Service (MHS) - Mental Health Service is an integrated mental health service for children and young people, who are in need of mental health services and who are living in the Melbourne western metropolitan region.

  • Mental Illness in Children - About 20% of American children suffer from a diagnosable mental illness during a given year, according to the U.S. Surgeon General. Further, nearly 5 million American children and adolescents suffer from a serious mental illness (one that significantly interferes with their day-to-day life). WebMD Inc.

  • NAMI’s Child & Adolescent Action Center - The NAMI Child & Adolescent Action Center is working to focus attention on the critical need for systems reform and to support communities and families. Our goal is to build and support our grassroots advocacy to ensure an expanded systems reform agenda at every level of government.

  • Resources for CAMHS - This site provides links to sites containing information that will be helpful to professionals working in the Child and Adolescent Emotional Health Services.

  • Schizophrenia in Children - Mounting evidence indicates that schizophrenia has neurodevelopmental roots. The appearance of schizophrenic symptoms before age 12 is rare (less than one-sixtieth as common as the adult-onset type), but studying these cases is important for an understanding of this disorder. National Mental Health Association Fact Sheet.

  • The Interdisciplinary Centre for Mental Health - The Interdisciplinary Centre for Mental Health was established in 2001. Based in the Department of Primary Care, the centre is a collaboration between The Institute of Applied Social Studies, Primary Care, Psychology, Psychiatry and the School of Health Sciences within the University of Birmingham, which formalises the joint interests and expertise in mental health.

  • Young mental health care slammed - Young people are admitted inappropriately. Young mental health patients are being put on "inappropriate" hospital wards, research suggests. A study shows many are admitted to adult psychiatric wards and general children's wards when they should be in specialist units. BBC News
